Dr. Jeannine卡马乔's Story

My family is originally from Nicaragua. I came to the United States when I was about five years old, but our family was deported back to Nicaragua. My senior year, I came back to the United States. It was a very rough time because I had to catch up and realign my Nicaraguan 学分 with U.S. 学分. However, we had very close family and friend connections with Hardin-Simmons. They helped me and my sisters to get plugged into the school.

From day one of admission until graduation, Hardin-Simmons was there for me and my family. Once you enroll in this school, you become a part of the HSU family. Everyone from faculty to staff to friends is all a part of this journey. There is something very special here. The intimacy of a smaller campus holds you. It was a great school for me. It gave me everything I needed for that next step in my career. That’s what I loved about Hardin-Simmons. 这是家.

HSU was not only there for my educational growth, but also for my spiritual growth. One of the most remarkable things that I remember hearing in one of my biology classes was that you could be a scientist and you could be a Christian at the same time. At HSU, I learned to do what I am passionate about science, medicine, health, and optometry. It’s amazing to know that there is no conflict between those things and Christ. Christ has given us these tools and this knowledge to go out into the world and do amazing things.

When I went to pursue my doctorate in Houston, many of my classmates had never heard of Abilene or Hardin-Simmons University. Some people thought that I might not be ready for the program, but I was more than ready. Hardin-Simmons equipped me with everything that I needed to pursue a very competitive professional program.

Even though I’ve graduated and I live in another city, I have still stayed connected with HSU. I’ve been a part of the 校友 Association for the last four years, and I’m the president this year. It’s been very fun to come back home and work with HSU in this capacity. I have also been helping high school students with college applications because I know what education has done for me. I want more people to experience that, and if they can experience it at Hardin-Simmons, 那就更好了.
